Windows Phone's NoDo Update Bigger Than Expected
Microsoft's long-awaited Windows Phone 7 "NoDo" update is apparently pushing its way into the ecosystem. That follows news from a couple weeks ago that the update was being pushed back from the first two weeks of March to the second half of the month. 
For some time, users have known that "NoDo" includes a cut-and-paste feature previously missing from Windows Phone 7, in addition to faster application loading and improved Marketplace search. According to a Windows Phone Update History posted on Microsoft's Windows Phone Website, though, the update (OS version 7.0.7390.0) contains some other interesting tidbits.
First, there are improvements to Messaging, WiFi and Outlook. With regard to the latter, according to the Windows Phone Website, "We've improved the experience of viewing iPhone photo attachments you receive from a non-Exchange-based email account."
Microsoft's update also improves the "stability of switching between camera and video modes," the experience of "syncing Facebook accounts," and "the experience of using a Bluetooth headset to make calls when you're playing music or videos."
That's pretty wide-ranging, certainly more so than some previous public announcements had let on, but also somewhat expected for a platform that's been on the market for six months. While Microsoft plans to stagger the update's worldwide release, new Windows Phone 7 smartphones from AT&T and Sprint are hitting the marketplace with the latest software preinstalled.
The HTC HD7S, available on AT&T within the next few weeks, features Windows Phone 7 on a 4.3-inch high-resolution screen. Sprint's HTC Arrive, the first Windows Phone 7 smartphone to appear on a CDMA (Code Division Mutliple Access) also includes the updated Windows Phone 7 software.
In February, Microsoft introduced a Windows Phone 7 update designed to help with future updates. Within a day of that update's rollout, however, a small number of users began complaining it stalled their smartphones.
In a corporate blog posting, Microsoft then claimed that only 10 percent of users' smartphones had choked on the new software. Nonetheless, the company temporarily suspended the update for Samsung phones until it could puzzle out some of the underlying issues.
In the wake of that little incident, Microsoft seemed more cautious in how it proceeded with the "NoDo" update. "After careful consultation with the team and our many partners, we've decided to briefly hold the March update in order to ensure the update process meets our standards and that of our customers," a Microsoft spokesperson wrote in a March 10 e-mail to eWEEK. "As a result, we will plan to begin delivering the update in the latter half of March."
Microsoft has an additional series of updates planned for the second half of 2011, including greater integration with Twitter, multitasking, and a new HTML5-friendly version of Internet Explorer Mobile.
But let's just see how smoothly the "NoDo" update proceeds, first.

Microsoft Wants Internet Explorer 6 Dead in the Worst Way
Most companies are a little averse to killing their own products. 
Not Microsoft, at least with Internet Explorer 6. If the increasingly antiquated Web browser were a vampire, Microsoft would be Van Helsing doing his utter best to slam a stake through its heart. That's because, at least in Microsoft's eyes, IE 6 *is* something of a vampire: aging, potentially dangerous and curiously unable to die.
Instead of a stake, though, Microsoft's killing instrument is a Website, titled "The Internet Explorer 6," which features the company practically begging people to stop using IE 6. Although only a tiny percentage of people continue to use IE 6 in the United States (2.9 percent), it still maintains a substantial market presence in places such as China (34.5 percent) and Japan (10.3 percent).
"The Web has changed significantly over the past 10 years," reads a note on the Website. "The browser has evolved to adapt to new Web technologies, and the latest versions of Internet Explorer help protect you from new attacks and threats." Translation: IE 6 is really slow, stupendously vulnerable, possibly has a near-controllable hankering to suck your blood, yada-yada.
Despite Microsoft's push, a sizable number of users continue to rely on IE 6 in conjunction with Windows XP, another legacy platform the company desperately wants the world to abandon in favor of Windows 7. A variety of enterprises and SMBs continue to use Windows XP and IE 6 as a platform for proprietary software whose code-base was written some time ago.
When I wrote about this issue yesterday on eWEEK, one anonymous commenter also offered an interesting explanation for IE 6's continued presence. "Look at the countries with the highest representation of IE 6. How do they line up with a list of countries with the highest rates of software piracy?" they wrote. "If you're running a pirated copy of Windows XP, and as a result cannot legitimately get updates from Microsoft, you're stuck with IE6."
That could be an explanation, too. Whatever the case, Microsoft wants its antiquated browser buried deep. It also hopes that users will gravitate towards IE 9, whose Release Candidate the company recently made available online. Some 25 million testers played around with the IE 9 beta, offering feedback in areas such as performance and standards, user experience and privacy and safety.
Even if Microsoft manages to kill the vampire, though, it still faces a handful of boogeymen: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and other browsers making strong plays for browser market share.

Huawei Officially Announces U8230 Android Smartphone
It's been a long time coming (we first got wind of a Huawei Android phone at this years Mobile World Congress) but finally Huawei has confirmed its long-awaited Android phone in the form of the U8230. It looks very similar to the mockup they had on display at MWC but with a bit of extra bling thanks to some silver edging.
Specs wise there's not much to go on. According to the press release it will sport a 3.5 inch touchscreen, allow users to switch between full and half QWERTY keyboards and has a 1500 mAh which they claim has "the longest battery capacity of any Android-powered handsets currently available." True, but then it doesn't take much to beat the G1's measly 1150 mAh or even the Magic's 1340 mAh. But hang on, doesn't Samsung's Galaxy have a 1500 mAh battery as well? Let's hope that Huawei's Android offering has a little more to brag about than increased battery life.

Obviously Apple products are still selling like warm bread, but Apple must be seeing it's position eroded to release ads that claim that only iPhones have access to apps, books and other things that Android has plenty of. Sprint officially opposed AT&T/T-Mobile Merger
Sprint has made it official that it plans to challenge the FCC over the sale of T-Mobile USA to AT&T for a reported $39 Billion. According to the press release, Sprint’s position is that the sale will reduce competition, limit innovation, and end up hurting consumers. Those are all the usual complaints that come from from a rival company when one of their competitors gets swallowed up by another. But if that’s the case, why isn’t making exclusive deals and locking down cellphones anti competitive as well?
