Jenga – Android Game Review

I’m sure most of you have played or at least heard of a little game called Jenga. Well thanks to Natural Motion Games, you can now play this classic game on your favorite Android device. They even consulted with the original creator of Jenga Leslie Scott, and it shows as the game is pretty awesome. It plays just like the real game, and can definitely be just as frustrating. I had a blast playing it, and it’s one game that I’ll definitely keep playing for awhile.

ASUS Padfone merges Android smartphone with tablet dock

What happens when you merge a smartphone with a tablet? You get the ASUS Padfone.

Evan Blass of PocketNow just posted some leaked photos that reveal one of the most interesting hardware ideas I have seen come to Android in awhile. The Padfone is a combination of a normal Android smartphone and a tablet accessory (appears to be 10 inch) that includes a special dock which completely consumes the phone when closed.

AT&T's Lancaster Looks Good But May Disappoint

There's no denying that AT&T has been particularly quiet about its plans for an Android phone release. Last month I speculated that the carrier may have picked up the HTC Hero but now, thanks to engadget, we have fairly credible confirmation that AT&T's first Android phone will actually be the HTC Lancaster.

At first look it seems to be quite a nice handset, an amalgamation of the G1 and Magic and had it been around sooner I would have chosen it over my G1 – or would I? I personally prefer a physical keyboard to the a touchscreen so the Lancaster seems to have everything going for it apart from the display. I'm really impressed by the G1's 3.2 inch HVGA (320 x 480) display but the Lancaster is let down by a smaller 2.8 inch QVGA (240 x 320) display which is a bit of a disappointment.

I'm also not sure about the MSM7225 processor (which the leaked Lancaster datasheet shows incorrectly as an MSN7225). Although, like the G1's MSM7201 the 7225 is a 528 MHz ARM processor, rumour is that it lacks a GPU. I can't seem to find any details on this processor on the Qualcomm website – maybe someone can shed some light on the differences between the MSM7201 and the MSM7225?

Microsoft Versus Google: European Edition

It's getting vicious between Google and Microsoft.

Last week, I wrote a few articles for eWEEK discussing the antitrust complaint Microsoft filed with the European Commission, pillorying Google as an 800-pound gorilla in the world of search.

"We're concerned by a broadening pattern of conduct aimed at stopping anyone else from creating a competitive alternative," Brad Smith, Microsoft's senior vice president and general counsel, wrote in a March 30 statement posted on the Microsoft on the Issues blog. "We've therefore decided to join a large and growing number of companies registering their concerns about the European search market."

His posting argued that Google restricts other search engines from property cataloging YouTube videos in search results, that it prevents those YouTube videos from running well on Windows Phones, that it blocks access to book publishers' content and that it restricts advertisers' access to their own data.

In addition, Smith accused Google of contractually blocking "leading Websites in Europe from distributing competing search boxes" and discriminating against competitors by raising the price for prominent placement in Google advertisements.

The European Commission, of course, spent years chasing Microsoft around the block over supposed anti-competitive practices related to Internet Explorer. Eventually, Redmond executives relented to releasing a "Web browser choice screen" that gave Windows users in the European Union a selection of browsers other than IE.

Google didn't take Microsoft's EC filing very well.

"We're not surprised that Microsoft has done this, since one of their subsidiaries was one of the original complainants," a Google spokesperson wrote in a March 31 e-mail to eWEEK. "For our part, we continue to discuss the case with the European Commission, and we're happy to explain to anyone how our business works."

By "one of their subsidiaries," the spokesperson is referring to Ciao! from Bing, an online-community portal aimed at a handful of Western European markets. Back in February 2010, the European Commission notified Google that Ciao, along with U.K. price-comparison Website Foundem and French legal search engine ejustice.fr, had filed complaints about Google's effect on European search-engine competition. Foundem is a member of ICOMP, a lobbying group sponsored by Microsoft.

Is Microsoft's move surprising? Not really.

Redmond is pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into supporting its Bing search engine, in exchange for incremental market-share gains (which add up, to be fair; if you add Bing.com's share with what the search engine earns from powering Yahoo's back-end search, Microsoft can claim close to 30 percent of the market, according to research firm comScore).

At the same time, Microsoft is also attempting to carve out a presence in the smartphone market with Windows Phone 7. Several rivals occupy that territory: Research In Motion, Apple, Google and (soon) Hewlett-Packard's re-launched Palm franchise. But it's Google's burgeoning market share that seems to have everyone else concerned.

Lastly, there's also the business cloud side of the equation. Google and Microsoft have been battling for several quarters over government and corporate contracts for their respective cloud IT services. In November 2010, Google filed a lawsuit against the federal government, alleging that the Department of the Interior unfairly restricted its bid to update its email and messaging system in favor of Microsoft's BPOS-Federal suite. That action alone hints at the animosity level between the two companies.

So a lawsuit with the European Commission is just another twist in what promises to be a long battle, one in which both sides seem willing to do anything to gain even a small advantage over the other.

Silverlight 5 Beta Might Ease Developer Silverlight Concerns

Microsoft is attempting to re-emphasize the role of HTML5 ahead of its MIX 2011 conference (also known as MIX11) starting April 12 in Las Vegas.

"While we have emphasized the role of HTML5 as the foundation of the recently released Internet Explorer 9 and have shown an unprecedented commitment to being leaders in HTML5 browsers," Walid Abu-Hadba, Scott Gutherie and S. Somasegar--all of them Microsoft corporate or senior vice presidents involved in the company's developer efforts--wrote in an April 4 posting on the Silverlight Team Blog, "we have probably not emphasized enough the tooling for HTML5."

The posting also insists that Microsoft will continue to support the Silverlight platform as a supposedly ideal cross-platform, cross-browser plug-in for the Web's rich content. Indeed, the company plans on delivering a beta of Silverlight 5 at MIX11. Silverlight originally made its debut in 2007 as a competitor to Adobe Flash, and indeed found its calling as the underpinning of many prominent Web applications such as the Netflix movie viewer. In addition, Microsoft decided that Silverlight tools would become a vital part of its Windows Phone 7 developer ecosystem.

While that might have led to the expectation on the part of some third-party developers that Silverlight would eventually become a much broader cross-platform tool, Microsoft soon put the brakes on some of its Silverlight evangelism, leading to a fair bit of consternation on the part of some developers. The April 4 posting seeks to solidify the company's position on Silverlight (and plug-ins in general) a little more.

"Neither plug-ins nor standards-based approaches ... represent the single answer to client development," the executives wrote. "In general, we know developers always want the best of everything, in a single tool, but at the same time recognize that is not a practical way to approach development."

And given HTML5's evolving role and capabilities in both mobile and desktop browsers, thanks at least in part to its ability to mirror the functionality of plug-ins such as Flash and Silverlight, it's become more of a factor in Microsoft's overall developer strategy.

"Over the coming months we'll be particularly demonstrative of our emphasis on HTML5, in Internet Explorer and in tools," the executives added. "HTML5 is a solution for many scenarios, but developers should make the appropriate choice based on application needs, knowing that we have a heritage and a future vision of supporting a wide variety of technologies to meet those needs."

Nonetheless, it seems that lingering developer fears over Silverlight fading away - after some developers have invested time and resources in the platform - can be put on hold for the moment, with news of the Silverlight 5 beta (not to mention, Microsoft continuing to use it as a platform for Windows Phone).
