Nokia 808 full specs

With this mornings announcement of the 808 from Nokia I thought it was pretty important to let you have the full specifications as soon as we could.

Clearly the 41 mega pixel camera sensor is what is generating the hype this morning. What is surprising is that the device is running Symbian Belle, something that at the press event Nokia didn't make a big fuss of. I didn't even realise they were going to release any more Symbian devices what with their focus being on Windows Phone and S40 for the lower end of the market.

Either way this new 808 looks to be pretty nice and the 41MP Carl Zeiss camera certainly will take mobile photography to the next level.

A few weeks ago we reported on Apple getting in hot water over the trademark for the name "iPad", and Proview, the company making the claim, were actually successful in getting the device banned in China. Well, Proview obviously didn't know it was dealing with THE Apple, and Apple have already managed to have the ruling overturned in Shanghai and suspended until a further date, which lead to some pretty heated exchanges between the 2 companies law teams.

It looks like the crafty folks at Google have decided to "head Apple off at the pass", when it comes to Apple's slide-to-unlock patent disputes. Google engineers and/or patent experts have just filed for a patent on a new way to unlock devices.

In case you haven't followed the Apple vs. the "world" news much, Apple is suing Samsung and Motorola for various violations of a "slide-to-unlock" patent, that many people feel is a bogus patent to begin with. Google isn't having any of that though, and instead of needlessly fighting potentially wasteful battles on that front, they are "going over the top" and skipping the issue altogether in the future. Their new patent application is for an "Input to Locked Computing Device" method of locking and unlocking your device. Here's a quick quote from Engadget's article with some more details,

...the application claims a method for a device unlocking process using one or more user inputs while simultaneously executing a command -- like calling a specific contact or opening an application. Those user inputs can take the form of passcodes, touch and drag, or audio commands. While the application's drawings depict such a system on a phone, it claims an unlocking system for desktops and laptops as well, so it could easily find its way onto a Chromebook or two.

For those wanting to pick a device based just on the camera there are others to choose from. The Apple iPhone 4S showed a marked improvement in terms of the camera from its earlier incarnation. There are several manual settings to increase or decrease the aperture and shutter speed, as well as changing the White Balance. Auto-focus and face detection make it easier to take pictures on the move. For those looking for a more automated offer there are settings including Smile Shot, Action and Cartoon for those who want to point and snap. HD video comes in at 720p and 1080p at 30fps which is smooth and also offers good colourisation.

The only device really challenging the Xperia S in terms of camera specifications is the Nokia N8, which remains a popular device. Although now fairly run of the mill its camera did make it stand out with 12 megapixels and Carl Zeiss optics. It comes with Xenon flash and face recognition software along with auto-focus. There is geo-tagging, a pinch zoom feature as well as an on-board photo editor. The video shoots in 720p and 25 fps.

The Sony Xperia S is one of the first major smartphone announcements for 2012. Launching with an impressive camera will undoubtedly win it fans as a disappointing camera, as Samsung found with the launch of the Galaxy Nexus, can switch more people off than manufacturers might expect. Although there are higher resolution video cameras available on smartphones 720p still offers a decent enough quality – and the Xperia S more than makes up for this in other areas. As a long-time producer of digital cameras – this is one area of the modern smartphone where Sony is miles ahead of its competition.
